Prepare a VA claim with better evidence

A practical starting point for records, accurate statements, and accredited help.

General education. Check current official rules and your own circumstances before acting.

Start with the official requirements

A useful claims strategy starts with an accurate, well-organized record. The evidence VA needs depends on the kind of claim and the condition. Use the official checklist for your situation. VA: Evidence needed for your claim

Organize what supports your claim

Create a simple index of relevant treatment records, service records, and supporting statements. Note the date, source, and what each document helps explain. Describe symptoms and their effects accurately; do not exaggerate or use a template that misrepresents your experience.

Choose help you can verify

An accredited VSO representative, attorney, or claims agent can help you understand the process. VA describes how to find and appoint an accredited representative; VSO representation is free. Ask about accreditation and any fees before agreeing to paid help. VA: Get help from an accredited representative

Your next step

Review VA’s filing instructions, keep copies of what you submit, and track requests or deadlines in your correspondence. No checklist can guarantee a rating or approval. VA: How to file a disability claim
